Dinner With Tony Kushner

Last night Tony Kushner and I ate dinner together.

Well ok. We ate at the same dinner, he at a head table and I in the green room (I snapped the photo during sound check), but in many ways the TCG Gala felt like one big family meal. It was truly inspiring to hear the leading lights of the American Theatre talk about their failures and successes, and mostly how much they love the art of story-telling.

The evening’s real entertainment was hearing NYC theatre legends dish some dirt about other old-timers in that loving, a-little-too-drunk sort of way. More conventionally, a few of us were on hand to sing from the new Jeff Buckley musical The Last Goodbye, lead by Jay Armstrong Johnson. Earlier in the evening, Jennifer Damiano and Victoria Platt pretty well brought the house down with a song from Venice, soon to open at the Public Theatre.

The evenings honorees were Ruth and Stephen Hendel and Ming Cho Lee.
